Meena and Deepa - Charting their own future
Just like hundreds of other women, they both got training in braiding Bhimal and Jute fiber several years ago from Pahadi Weaves. However, through their sheer hard work and enterprising skills, they are now independent businesswomen collaborating with 3 other ladies from their family and neighborhood.
Now they are not afraid to rent a truck and procure Bhimal fiber directly from Uttarakhand villagers, as demand for their Bhimal Chappals has increased.
Seeing them happy and successful without Pahadi Weaves' support was truly inspiring. This is exactly what our dream was: to enable rural women to chart their own future.

Doli - A Pahadi Weaves “gigworker”
Doli, her husband, and their 3 kids moved from their native village to Rishikesh mainly for the kids' education. She gets paid on a “per piece” basis. Works 4 to 5 hours a day and makes 60 to 80 rupees. She sets her own schedule based on the kids' school timings.
The whole family lives in a rented one-bedroom tiny house for Rs. 3,000 per month. The dad works in a warehouse loading/unloading goods, and the kids attend government schools because the family can’t afford private school fees.
She is so happy to join Pahadi Weaves for a few hours a day. Instead of watching TV or just chatting with neighbors, now, she can use the same time to make some money for the family. Plus, she likes to just get out of the house and meet other ladies doing similar work.

Nirmala Devi - Trainee to an Entrepreneur
It is hard to imagine that in just 11 years, Nirmala Devi of Gumaniwala, part of Vaishnavi Self Help Group (SHG), would emerge as a leader in her community, encouraging valuable support and part-time employment to several women in her financially challenged neighborhood.
Nirmala Devi recalled how she was reluctant in the beginning to step out of the house and attend free training provided by Pahadi Weaves to stitch Jute bags. It was a big step towards financial freedom. Our training and unique support to procure and market products were instrumental in boosting her confidence.
She was so proud to mention how she was away from home for 15 days recently to sell her products at a government-sponsored exhibition in Delhi.
